Job Description 

We are seeking an experienced Family Law Paralegal to join one of Virginia’s leading law firms. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with significant family law experience who excels in managing cases, preparing legal documents, and ensuring exceptional client service.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in family law matters, including divorce, custody disputes, and support petitions, with a proven ability to handle cases independently while collaborating with attorneys both remotely and in person.

About the Role

As a Family Law Paralegal, you will work closely with attorneys to provide critical support in a wide range of family law cases, ensuring all aspects of case preparation and client communication are handled with precision and care.

Responsibilities Include

  • Drafting, reviewing, and finalizing family law documents such as pleadings, custody agreements, support petitions, and settlement agreements.
  • Conducting legal research to support case preparation and strategy development.
  • Managing case files, tracking deadlines, and maintaining accurate and organized records using legal document management systems.
  • Preparing and filing court documents in accordance with Virginia’s family law rules and procedures.
  • Communicating empathetically with clients to gather necessary information, provide updates, and address general inquiries.
  • Assisting attorneys in preparing for depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials, including the preparation of exhibits and evidence.
  • Utilizing legal software such as Clio for case management and billing purposes, along with Microsoft Office for drafting and documentation needs.
  • Supporting attorneys on divorce-related financial matters, including asset and property division, retirement account division, and support entitlement calculations.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a paralegal, with substantial experience in family law matters.
  • Paralegal certification or degree from an accredited program (required).
  • Proficiency with legal document management systems and software, particularly Clio and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Virginia family law rules, procedures, and filings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a client-centered approach to problem-solving.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience handling sensitive cases with empathy, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Background knowledge in Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs) and the division of retirement and pension plans.
  • Familiarity with spousal and child support entitlements, including benefits allocation in divorce settlements.
  • Understanding of financial disclosure requirements, property settlements, and the valuation of marital assets.
  • A proactive approach to identifying potential issues in divorce and custody agreements, ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines.
